Theme 3 - Enhancing syndromic surveillance for early detection of incidents

University of East Anglia

Dr Iain Lake is a medical geographer and environmental scientist at the University of East Anglia and an expert in the use of health surveillance data for spatiotemporal epidemiology studies.

Over the past 10 years he has worked extensively with PHE routine and enhanced surveillance health data (e.g. TB, crytosporidiosis, campylobacteriosis).

Much of this research has focussed upon detecting environmental signals in surveillance data and quantifying the impact of interventions (e.g. the 2001 cryptosporidiosis regulations).

As a geographic information system (GIS) expert he has pioneered the examination of spatial patterns in surveillance data using GIS techniques.

Most of these studies have been conducted in conjunction with PHE staff. He has also worked on Persistent Organic Pollutants surveillance extensively for the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
