Theme 5 - Improving the operational effectiveness of skin decontamination in exposure to toxic chemicals
Dr Simon Wilkinson is a Staff Scientist at the Medical Toxicology Centre (MTC), Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
Since 2004, Dr Wilkinson has held joint responsibility for collaborative research projects, with the Director and senior academic staff at the MTC in dermal absorption and metabolism in projects funded by the Health Protection Agency (HPA, now Public Health England), UK Home Office and UK Department of Health.
From 2004 to 2009 Simon was a member of the HPA on call team for chemical incidents for the Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards.
He has also worked with colleagues in the Centre for Local and Regional Services of the HPA to provide detailed toxicological assessment in a number of contaminated land cases, in conjunction with health services and local authorities.
His current research interests include the modeling of dermal absorption and distribution chemicals following exposure during a chemical release incident using in vitro and predictive modeling approaches, with a strong emphasis on decontamination methods.
Simon also researches the role of skin metabolism in the toxification and detoxification of environmental chemicals and cosmetics.
He is also a consultant on cutaneous metabolism for a major cosmetics company.
