University of East Anglia

Professor Iain Lake is an environmental epidemiologist and medical geographer. He specialises in the use of health surveillance data, especially syndromic surveillance data to improve event detection and situational awareness. He has researched the types of public health events that can/cannot be detected by syndromic surveillance data and compared different detection algorithms. He has also pioneered cutting-edge technologies (e.g. machine learning), to support the UKHSA risk assessment process for dealing with multiple potential outbreaks. Other research has focussed on how weather (e.g. extreme rainfall, temperature) and environmental conditions (e.g. land use) affect the seasonality and spatial distributions of diseases ranging from gastrointestinal infections to dengue fever and pollen allergies.
