This will take place on the 22nd and 23rd November 2016 in London. The course is aimed at people with little or no background in the behavioural and social sciences, and who may be conducting research with volunteers for the first time.

Location: Novotel Waterloo, London, SE1 7LS

Research which requires human participants is not only open to potential methodological and scientific biases which can affect its relevance and accuracy, it is also subject to numerous local, national and international guidelines, principles and regulations surrounding, for example, management of data, ethical considerations (British Psychological Society ethical principles), the declaration of Helsinki and good clinical practice (GCP). Not adhering to such regulations and principles can, not only jeopardise the scientific rigour and integrity of the research, but can also be unlawful with a potential serious risk to the reputation of organisations involved. This course will provide course delegates with the knowledge to design and conduct robust, safe and insightful studies with human participants.

Aim: To understand good practice in the conduct of research with human participants using a range of different research methodologies.

Learning Outcomes:
• Understanding research ethics and the ethical review process
• Ensuring confidentiality & good data management
• Designing robust studies; including effective sampling & minimising bias
• Understanding and selecting quantitative & qualitative research methods
• A clinic session with experienced researchers for course delegates’ specific questions

Course fee: £430 (£345 NHS/Student discount)

Who should attend:

  • Those who are required to conduct service evaluations, research studies or exercises involving human participants
  • Those with little or no background in behavioural or social sciences
  • Those with some experience of conducting research studies looking for a refresher
  • Masters or PhD level students from a wide range of disciplines

This course was previously run on a smaller scale and received excellent feedback from delegates:

“I found it most helpful to learn about different types of research and the advantages and disadvantages.”
“Very good balance of information provided. Good choice of talks/speakers. I Liked the exercise.”
“The course was so informative and relevant for me. It really reinforced the importance of considering the impact of your research on the participants, which when you have an end goal or objective that you are working too, can easily be overlooked.”
